Amanda Ruby is a software engineer who also enjoys reading lots of books, cross-stitching, video gaming, and exploring local history. While she is new to a lot of the tools in stock, learning how to use them is one of her favorite things about volunteering at the Tool Library. Amanda fell in love with the atmosphere and, most importantly, the people in the Main St. shop, and she was determined to become part of it.
How and when did you first get involved with the Tool Library? What led you to become one of our volunteers?
I got myself a membership when I needed to borrow tools for a tree planting day near Eugene V. Debs Hall on the East Side. I was so impressed with the vibe—great people doing good things for the community—that I decided to volunteer. Besides, as a software engineer, I don’t get enough opportunities to do hands-on things!
How has volunteering impacted your life and your sense of community?
I’ve really enjoyed handling and learning about these tools, but the best part has been the people. It’s cliche, I know! I also enjoy getting a peek at what people are doing around the community WITH these tools. Buffalo has a lot of older buildings and outdoor spaces that need care, and I find it really heartwarming to see people actively working to improve their spaces and community.
What is your favorite thing to do as a volunteer?
At this point? Learning! There’s a lot to learn for sure.
Are you happier in the shop or at community events?
Hard to say! It’s my goal to start doing more community events this year.
When you’re volunteering, what typically keeps you the busiest?
A summer shop shift, helping everyone who comes through the door!
