The Tool Library (TL) is a nonprofit tool-lending library serving Buffalo and all of Western New York. The Tool Library’s mission is to provide communities with the tools they need to create the change they want. We believe that cost shouldn’t be a barrier to fixing up your home, growing your own food, or improving your community. Through a sharing economy model, members can borrow from an inventory of 5,000+ tools. These same tools also support community-based, issue-focused programming like urban reforestation, food access, greenspace development, and commercial corridor revitalization.

Repair Technician
The Repair Technician plays a key role in supporting The Tool Library’s core tool borrowing program. This position ensures the safety, functionality, and longevity of our 5,000+ shared tools by performing routine maintenance, diagnosing issues, and completing repairs. In addition to hands-on repair work, the technician supports volunteer training, contributes to the development of repair guides, and helps strengthen a community-wide culture of repair.
This position supports The Tool Library in modeling the circular economy, reducing waste, and ensuring equitable access to high-quality tools for families, neighbors, and nonprofit partners across Western New York.
Responsibilities
Tool Maintenance & Repair (Primary ~60%)
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair a wide range of tools and equipment, including power tools, hand tools, and Lead Safe Work Practice tools.
- Complete routine maintenance such as cleaning, sharpening, lubrication, and calibration.
- Document repairs and update inventory records to ensure accurate tracking and accountability.
- Identify tools that require replacement parts and assist with procurement of batteries, switches, cords, blades, and other components.
Volunteer Training & Mentorship (~20%)
- Support the delivery of hands-on training sessions for volunteers in basic tool maintenance and repair.
- Demonstrate proper repair techniques, safe tool operation, diagnostics, and routine maintenance.
- Serve as a coach and mentor to volunteer repair team members, helping build confidence and transferable skills.
Workshop Support & Public Education (~10%)
- Assist in the setup, facilitation, and breakdown of (6) six public facing workshops and repair-focused learning sessions over the course of 2026.
- Provide friendly, accessible repair guidance to Tool Library and community members during workshops.
Program Development & Documentation (~10%)
- Contribute to the creation and updating of repair guides, reference sheets, and maintenance logs.
- Help maintain organized repair benches, parts storage systems, and labeling for repaired inventory.
- Participate in data collection for program evaluation, including tracking repairs completed, volunteer hours supported, and waste diverted.
Qualifications
Required
- Computer literacy skills (GMail, Google Drive, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with tool repair, mechanical troubleshooting, or related technical work.
- Familiarity with the safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and small electrical equipment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose mechanical or electrical issues.
- Comfort teaching or mentoring volunteers and working collaboratively in a community setting.
- Commitment to The Tool Library’s mission of sharing, repair, sustainability, and equitable access.
Preferred
- Experience in facilities maintenance, equipment repair, trades, or fabrication.
- Prior involvement in community workshops, makerspaces, tool libraries, or repair cafes.
- Ability to create simple written repair instructions or visual guides.
- Interest in the circular economy, waste reduction, and community skill sharing.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Work is performed onsite at The Tool Library’s workshop and lending facility.
- Some evening or weekend hours may be needed to support volunteer trainings or workshops.
- Must be able to lift and move tools or equipment (typically 10–40 lbs).

Salary
The pay for this position is $30/hour for approximately 5 hours per week. This is a 1-year, grant-funded position with the intention to grow and evolve the role as additional funding and organizational capacity allow. The Tool Library is committed to evaluating this position over the year with the goal of expanding it into a longer-term, sustainable role.
